Cataracts vs. Glaucoma: What’s the Difference?
While patients often confuse cataracts and glaucoma, they affect completely different parts of the eye and require distinct treatment approaches:
Cataracts occur when the natural lens inside your eye becomes cloudy over time, making vision look foggy, dim, or hazy.
Glaucoma is progressive damage to the optic nerve—the cable connecting your eye to your brain—usually caused by elevated fluid pressure inside the eye.

What to Know About Cataracts
Cataracts are a normal part of aging. As cells build up in the lens, it hardens and turns yellowish or opaque.
Common Symptoms
- Blurry or hazy vision that glasses cannot fix
- Halos or severe glare while driving at night
- Needing brighter lighting to read small print
- Colors appearing faded or washed out
When Is Surgery Needed?
Having a cataract does not mean you need immediate surgery. Surgery is recommended when impaired vision starts interfering with your daily quality of life—such as driving, reading, or hobbies.
During outpatient surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed using ultrasound and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Patients can choose standard monofocal lenses or premium options designed to reduce overall dependence on reading glasses.
Understanding Glaucoma: The “Silent” Disease
Glaucoma is often called a silent condition because it typically develops without early pain or sudden changes.
Why Early Detection Matters
Glaucoma steals peripheral vision first. Because vision loss happens gradually and both eyes work together to compensate, most people do not notice damage until it becomes severe.
How Glaucoma Is Treated
While optic nerve damage cannot be reversed, progression can be slowed significantly by lowering eye pressure through:
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)
A painless, 5-minute in-office laser procedure that improves natural fluid drainage. It is widely recommended as a first-line treatment to help reduce reliance on daily eye drops.
Prescription Eye Drops
Daily medications that reduce fluid production or improve drainage.
Sustained Delivery & MIGS
Advanced medication implants or micro-surgeries (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) often performed alongside cataract procedures.
