Glaucoma

Severe eye pain that starts suddenly. Blurred vision that does not clear. Halos around lights at night.

Could this be more than eye strain?

Angle-closure glaucoma can cause a rapid rise in eye pressure, and in some cases, it may require urgent treatment to reduce the risk of permanent vision loss. For patients in Hanford and surrounding communities, understanding the warning signs and available treatment options is critical.

What Is Angle-Closure Glaucoma?

Your eye continuously produces fluid that drains through a small structure called the drainage angle. In angle-closure glaucoma, that angle becomes narrowed or blocked. Fluid builds up, and intraocular pressure (IOP) increases.

If pressure rises quickly, the optic nerve may sustain damage in a short period of time. In other cases, pressure elevation develops gradually and causes slower changes.

When Can Angle-Closure Glaucoma Become an Emergency?

Angle-closure glaucoma generally presents in two patterns: acute and chronic.

Acute Angle-Closure

Symptoms often develop abruptly and may include:

  • Intense eye pain
  • Sudden blurred vision
  • Halos around lights
  • Redness
  • Headache
  • Nausea

When eye pressure elevates rapidly, urgent ophthalmic evaluation is strongly recommended. Early pressure reduction significantly lowers the likelihood of permanent optic nerve damage.

Routine eye exams help detect narrow angles before they create serious complications.

Immediate Goal: Lowering Eye Pressure

The primary objective in treating angle-closure glaucoma is reducing intraocular pressure safely and efficiently.

Medical Therapy

Prescription eye drops and oral medications are often used to:

  • Decrease fluid production
  • Improve drainage
  • Stabilize pressure

Medical therapy may serve as an initial stabilizing step or as part of ongoing management, depending on disease severity.

At Kings Eye Center, glaucoma care plans are customized based on optic nerve findings, pressure measurements, and individual risk factors.

Laser Treatment for Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Laser procedures frequently provide effective pressure control and help prevent recurrence.

Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI)

Laser peripheral iridotomy creates a small opening in the iris. This opening allows fluid to circulate more freely and reduces the likelihood of angle blockage.

Patients often benefit from:

  • An in-office procedure
  • Minimal downtime
  • Rapid pressure improvement

In many cases, LPI is recommended when narrow angles are identified—even before a full acute episode occurs.

When Is Glaucoma Surgery Recommended?

If medications and laser treatment do not achieve adequate pressure control, surgical intervention may be considered.

Kings Eye Center offers advanced surgical options for patients in Hanford and nearby Central Valley communities.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)

Modern MIGS procedures such as:

  • iTrack™
  • Streamline™

These techniques aim to improve natural drainage pathways. Compared to traditional surgery, MIGS often involves:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced postoperative discomfort

Surgical decisions depend on disease progression, anatomical findings, and response to prior treatment.

Why Early Detection Matters

Certain factors increase the risk of angle-closure glaucoma, including:

  • Age over 60
  • Farsightedness
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Previously diagnosed narrow angles

Comprehensive eye exams allow ophthalmologists to evaluate drainage angles, measure eye pressure, and assess optic nerve health. Identifying narrow angles early may create an opportunity for preventive laser treatment.

Residents of Hanford who have risk factors or new visual symptoms should consider scheduling a comprehensive glaucoma evaluation.

What Our Patients Are Saying

“Dr. Hernandez was knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. I highly recommend her for glaucoma care.”

Protect Your Vision with Timely Care

Angle-closure glaucoma can progress quickly in some situations and more gradually in others. Recognizing symptoms and seeking prompt care significantly reduces the risk of long-term vision impairment.
